PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
September 16, 2008
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Larry Robinson, president at 7:00
OPENING PRAYER AND
WELCOME
Fr. Daly led the group in prayer and welcomed everyone to the meeting.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Glennete Fitzmyer, seconded by Tracy Doyle, made a motion to approve the minutes from the May 13, 2008 meeting. Without objection, the motion was passed.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
The following officers were voted in for 2008-2009: Larry Robinson as President, Jim Gerber as Vice-President, and Regina Supanick as Secretary.
PASTOR’S REPORT
· Fr. Daly thanked those who participated in parish picnic. The Youth Group’s play, The Bible in Thirty Minutes or Less, with the help of Justin Stockton, was successful.
· There had been no funerals recently, but he had anointed Antonia Casserello.
· The parish calendar for 2009 will contain photos of the stain glass windows, with commentary on each by Fr. Daly. Bruce Brooks is working on the pictures and production of the calendars. The Youth Group will sell the calendars in December, and the proceeds will go either to houses in Nicaragua or Safe Nights.
· The Peace Walk will be held on Sunday, September 21, beginning at St. Paul’s at 2:00 and the prayer session at 3:00 at the Courthouse.
· Planning for Safe Nights has begun. The program will go from the proposed 22 weeks to 20 weeks because not enough churches are sponsoring the program. SJV will be sponsoring two weeks (Thanksgiving week is one and will include an Orphans’ Dinner)
· Fr. Daly said the Evangelical churches are getting involved in Safe Nights.
· There will be a county wide food drive in October, which will include the involvement of the local churches, schools, hospital, and businesses. The organizations will make announcements, display signs, and take up collections to assist in food collection.
· Fr. Daly reported that the land on Tobacco Ridge Rd. has been appraised, and it was concluded that there is no road accessibility from our property. Discussion of what could be done with the land followed, and included transferring it to the ACLT for trails on the Parker’s Creek Watershed.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
· The Facilities Report was tabled until October to give members of the council a chance to read the report.
o Fr. Daly reported the Committee met with each group in the parish
o Father also emphasized the suggestion of renovating the classrooms in the Vianney Room.
o $100 000 was allocated, by the Finance Council to complete various capital projects
o Discussion of the ramifications and changes was held
NEW BUSINESS
· A series of Visioning Workshops will be held after Mass, on November 1st, from 9-2 to entertain the parishes’ ideas for the Catholic Charities Building, Project Echo, and the reconfiguration of the Vianney Room.
· The All Saints Day mass will combine the memorial for All Souls
· Hurricane Ike: Information will be brought to the October meeting to see if we need to help anyone. Our focus will be on a Church community.
· Electronic Communications for the Parish- Website to include a bulletin board, web pages for various ministries, and ability to make electronic payments
· Discussion of electronic payments was held. George Sullivan made a motion that the Financial Council should investigate the use of electronic payments as an option for parishioners to pay their tithes. It was seconded by Tracy Doyle and without objection the motion passed.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
· Father will speak to the Council in October on Spiritual Renewal
· Adult Education begins on September 17
· Altar Servers: there are 4 levels based on experience and development. Larry Robinson, moderator of the servers, stated that a level of reverence and pride needs to be shown on the altar.
· Future meetings of the Parish Council will be held in the Conference room, in the McFadden Center.
· Father Daly would like to offer a Parish Mission for Lent
· The Spanish Language Mass is being offered on Sundays at 5:30, with Fr. Jaime, Fr. Dan, and Fr. Daly taking turns to serve at the mass. There is a need to establish set services for Eucharist Ministers and Liturgical readers.
· Fr. Vallarto, from Nicaragua, will be at the 9:30 Mass on September 21st to receive a gift of a silver chalice donated in memory of Carl Shifflette and Father Vallarto’s mother by the Knights of Columbus.
· There is a need for more musicians, with Peggy doing 4 or 5 liturgies each weekend. Anyone who knows an organist or pianist, please call the parish.
· Thank you to Steve Watson and Donny Smithburger for fixing the AC, by replacing the compressor in the Vianney Room. Donny also donated a panel truck for parish use.
· Thanks to Joe Scanlan for donating a bucket truck and snow removal equipment.
· Justin Stockton has left the parish to go to college, and will no longer serve as the Youth Coordinator. The tasks of the coordinator will be taken over by other activities.
· Retreats – most parishes in the county have started their own retreats, so we will have to rethink the program and look into revive inter-parish retreats.
