AUGUST 2005

For The Good of the Order!  A Few Beer Quotes to Remember.

“You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline – it helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons but at the very least you need a beer.”

                                                                                                                        Frank Zappa

I don’t know, does anyone agree with me that he must have been a Knight?

“24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case.  Coincidence?”  Steven Wright

I think not, and another Knight!

“Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk.  That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.”

                                                                                                                        Ernest Heminway

Good Advice, Huh?

“Alcohol, the cause and solution to all life’s problems.”  Homer Simpson

A little off the mark, but still the cause and solution to a lot of problems.

“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”  Benjamin Franklin

And finally a little philosophy – “Work is the curse of the drinking class.”  Oscar Wilde

        Grand Knight’s Report

My brother Knights, I have been your Grand Knight for over a month now and things sure are different at the top.  Not bad, just different.  I have gained a whole bunch of new friends who all want to talk to me at the same time and who all have great ideas on what I should and shouldn’t do for the council this year.  The suggestions are great and keep them coming, but don’t be surprised if I appoint you to help make your suggestions a reality J.  I am also starting to get writer’s cramp from all of the papers that have to be signed by the Grand Knight (i.e. checks, membership cards, Degree certificates, meeting hall reservations requests, etc.)   I am having fun though and will continue to do what I can to make this year great for all of us.

For those of you who were not at our Thursday, July 28 meeting at Jesus the Divine Word, you missed our Districts’ 1st and 2nd degree teams in action.  They were at the top of their game as usual. We had 2 candidates make their 1st and 2nd degrees and also Fr. Francisc Ungureanu, from Romania, made his 2nd degree. He said that he would be back next summer to make his 3rd degree.  Congratulations to all 3 of our Brother Knights!!!!

I also unveiled our new council polo shirts.  Please refer to our website (www.kofc11259.us) for a picture of the logo and more information.

The car/truck raffle is going full steam ahead.  We have sold over 1,000 tickets in the last 3 weeks and will be selling many more until the drawing October 8 at the Columbus Day Ball.  We need your help, even an hour or 2, so check the website (www.kofc11259.us) for our ticket sale dates and locations.  Also, if you are interested in attending the Columbus Day Ball, please let me know. The tickets are $35 per person.

Finally, I want to thank my wife, Margaret, who has been designing and printing all of the invitations for the Council New Officer’s and Ladies Mass / Installation / Dinner that is scheduled for Saturday, August 27 at Jesus the Divine Word.  You should be receiving your invitation in the mail in the next few weeks.  Please RSVP by August 22 either by phone @ (410) 586-0317 or email @ sbaydc10747@aol.com, so that we will have enough food for everyone to enjoy.  And enjoy you will, since Margaret has also volunteered to cook the delicious dinner.

Until next month, do today what others won’t, so that you can live tomorrow like others can’t.

Vivat Jesus,

Stephen J. Bayliff, GK

If you are like most people, you probably have a friend or family member who you are praying for because they are sick in body, mind or soul.  Again, if you are like most people, your prayer probably consists of vague thoughts of the person you are praying for, and a few Hail Marys or a Rosary, and you are done.  There is nothing wrong with this approach because healing of the body, mind, or spirit comes from God and is not dependent on our effort.  Prayer on the other hand is a form of communication.  There are as many forms of prayer as there are people, though we can safely group most prayer in two forms; recitational and contemplative.  The form of your prayer is not really very important.  What is important is that you are opening your mind and heart to God.  While He does not need our prayers, prayer is one of the most important things that we can do.  Why?  Because in the end it is the main process we have wherein we direct our attention and open our hearts to God.  The more you pray, the more you allow God to work His Grace in you and through you. This is important when you are praying for someone, who is ill because the more you open yourself to God’s Grace, the more you will trust in God.  The level of your trust in God is important because you close yourself off to the workings of God’s Grace in you and through you when you doubt or you ask half-heartedly for His intercession.

Another important component of our efforts in prayer for the sick is perseverance.  Don’t expect to say a few half-hearted Hail Marys and have God work.  Yes, it is true that God can and does work sometimes very quickly when asked to cure someone.  But just as often it can take daily prayer and fasting.

The following is a prayer that is a composite of several prayers I have run across in the last couple of years, and which ask for God’s intercession on the behalf of the sick.  I have found it quite successful in focusing my prayer on the behalf of someone, and I believe it to be a powerful prayer, if said from the heart and repeated daily in a novena or longer for the person whom you are praying.  If you really want to make it powerful, ask all the angels, saints, martyrs, blesseds, and souls in Purgatory to join you in saying the prayer.  That way you can magnify your prayer even unto the base of the thrown of God.

Lord, you have said, “Seek and ye shall find.  Ask and you shall receive.  Knock and it shall be opened to you.”  In hope and in love, Lord, I ask Thee upon this promise, which Thou made to Thy disciples, to intercede on the behalf of (NAME), that they be healed in body and spirit, if that is Thy Will Lord.  Thou aren’t the same Lord who healed the woman who had been bleeding for years at a time simply by the touch of her hand on Thy robe.  O Lord!  I desire that there be no delay; think of the matter Thyself, for I mean to be heard.  Thou aren’t my Father, and the Father of (name), for whom I am praying, and if Thou wilt not do this for us, there is no one else who can do it.  Thy Holy Will be done, however.

If it is not Thy Will that a complete healing be granted, I ask Thee, who has only love for us, to pour out Thy graces upon (name) that they may be comforted physically, mentally, and spiritually, and that they will only be brought closer to Thee in bearing their suffering.  I know which outcome I would prefer Lord, but it is not my will but Thine be done.  I place my request for a complete cure in Thy hands, requesting Thy aid in Jesus’ Holy Name; putting all my trust in His Holy Name.  I ask for this grace upon Jesus’ Most Precious Blood

As many of you know, we have a couple of our Knights who need our prayers.  We should be praying for all our fellow members and their families.  We would be happy to mention anyone who you would like to have special prayers said for here in the newsletter.  I am sure there are many people that should be mentioned here, but two come to mind immediately.  Please pray for John Dorn and his family.  Also, please pray for Sal Puleo, who has been in the hospital recently and is in need of your prayers.  Also please pray for Pat and Elroy McLeod, Lou and Ray Cicchini, Joe Boyd, our seminarians, and the priest of the parish we serve. Remember Doug Sparrow, as well.

News from the District Deputy:  Jim Rank, SK

District Deputy's Report:

Right now at this very moment there are a number of your fellow Knights who are volunteering their time to assist with the council’s truck raffle program. The truck raffle effort is very important because of two reasons.  First, because most of the money collected goes towards the scholarship fund.  Second, some of the money collected comes back to the council and this is very important, particularly when the council does not have much in the way of money coming in since we no longer work football games.  Yes, it is a very busy time of year with lots of people looking forward to vacations, and then getting ready for school to start and so on and so on.  Donation of a couple of hours for either the truck raffle or the tootsie roll programs would be big help.  As a fellow Knight, we need your help in order to make these two programs successful.  The success of council programs depends on the contributions of not just the few, but the many of us who are members of 11259.  Come out to collect donations for the raffle tickets.  Give a couple hours of your time to this important effort.  I will see you out there!

Vivat Jesus!

IMPORTANT, IMPORTANT, IMPORTANT!

Our council under the great efforts of John McFadden has started a web page that will soon contain issues of the newsletter and other information.  Your ignorant editor, whose computer now in firmly in the last century will have to upgrade to be able to properly assist Jack in getting copies of the newsletter up on the web page.  For those of you who have more up-to-date equipment and software, you can access the web page at www.kofc11259.us

        Fourth Degree

On July 23, 2005, Ed Waskiewicz was installed as the Faithful Navigator of the Lord Baltimore Assembly.  Celebration of the Mass began at 5:30 P.M., and the 4th Degree Choir served as the musical accompaniment for the Mass.  The lovely Diane Wood was the pianist, and the choir was directed by Charles Smallwood.  Because the piano music was so expertly played, several of the Knights from out of council were seen conferring at the reception following the installation.  They were overheard talking about drafting Diane into the Knights.  Someone also was overheard mentioning the cutting of hair and dressing Diane in a tux.

Your editor has not been to many installations, but this was one of the most heartwarming affairs I have ever attended.  The speeches by the state folks were excellent and informative, but the comments of both Nancy and Ed were very touching.  Please keep Ed and all the leaders of the Assembly in your prayers.  Also, please keep Nancy in your prayers because she has to put up with Ed and he will likely be calling on her frequently for assistance and the head honcho.  Even if he doesn’t, she has got to put up with his absence while he is about Knights things.

Attention Ladies: Council 11259 is starting the process of trying to form a Knight’s Auxiliary, which is an organization that will ultimately function much like the Ladies of the Fourth Degree function now.  The formation of a Knight’s Auxiliary might best be handled if a few of our fine ladies who already participate in the Ladies of the Fourth Degree would step forward and take the lead in starting up the Knight’s Auxiliary.  If you are interested in helping us start an Auxiliary, please contact the Grand Knight a 410 257-2072.

        Pro-Life

Cardinal William H. Keeler, chairman of the U.S. Bishops Committee for Pro-life Activities, criticized Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's announcement today that he will support federally funded stem cell research that requires destroying human embryos.

Cardinal Keeler's statement follows: "Today Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist announced he will support using federal funds to encourage the destruction of living human embryos for their stem cells. Despite the Senator's disclaimers to the contrary, this position is not pro-life.  Especially disturbing is the Senator's insistence that human embryos unwanted by their own parents are owed the same dignity and respect as children and adults, but may nevertheless be killed for research material. Such destruction of innocent human life, even out of a desire to help others, rests on a utilitarian view that undermines human dignity and human respect, as Senator Sam Brownback ably pointed out today in his response.

Senator Frist's effort to make an analogy with organ transplants also fails, because it would be gravely immoral as well as illegal to harvest any patient's vital organs when he or she is still alive.  Despite his warning against offering false hope to patients, Senator Frist also repeated claims that are untrue or misleading about the unique promise of embryonic stem cells. No one has identified any disease that can be treated only with these cells; no one even knows whether they will ever provide a safe and reliable treatment for the conditions already being successfully treated using adult stem cells.  These factual issues will no doubt be explored by others. My own central concern is that neither sound ethics nor good government can rest on the principle that the end justifies the means.  I commend President Bush for his laudable pledge to veto such legislation."

Did you know the State Council has a new web site containing a clearinghouse of info on the Pro-life efforts of our Order?  It is http://www.kofc-md.org/pages/Service/community.htm#ProLife

        INSURANCE

So you say everything is honky dory and you are well taken care of.  You got your life insurance from the life insurance guy.  You got your health insurance from work.  You got your disability insurance from the another agent.  You got your long-term care insurance from the long-term guy.  But are you sure all these different programs from all these different guys are working together as well as they should for your family’s maximum benefit? Better still with many families being double earner families, are you’re various insurance policies working together for both earners?  If there is any question, you should consider giving me a call if you want to know more about what I can do for you.  301-262-4300  Cell:  301-335-7939   Fax: 301-262-6304.

Trivia Question

Last Month’s trivia question was as follows: what are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and what are the twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit? The answer is found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church at 1830 where it states that “The moral life of Christians is sustained by the gifts of the Holy Spirit.”  The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.  The fruits of the Holy Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory.  The tradition of the Church list twelve of them:  charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity.  What the Church means by indicating that the fruits of the Holy Spirit are the “first fruits of eternal glory,” is that when we respond to God’s call to us by opening our hearts and mind to Him in faith, hope, and love by our prayer and through the Eucharist, God gives in greater and greater quantities the gifts of His Spirit, which then produces in our lives results that remake our very nature in ways that make the fruits of living a Christian life overflow in our hearts, minds and spirits.

This month’s trivia question is as follows:  There are seven Capital sins?

TRUCK RAFFLE

The schedule for this year’s Truck Raffle is as follows: Sat. 8/6: 8:00 am to 11a.m., Giant and  WalMart, Sat. 8/13:  8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., WalMart,  Sat. 8/20: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.,  Safeway, Sat. 8/27: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Giant, Sat. 9/10: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., WalMart, Sat, 9/17: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Giant and Safeway, Sat. 9/24: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., WalMart, Sat. 10/1: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Giant & WalMart.

The Truck Raffle is important because it is one of our most successful ways of raising donations for the Knights of Columbus charity and scholarship funds. You can help by volunteering to sell tickets in front of one of our local stores. It is important that you give a couple of hours of your time in front of one of the stores in order for the program to be a success.  Someone will likely be getting in touch with you shortly regarding your availability to work selling tickets at the local WalMart, K-Mart, Safeway, or Giant in the near future.  We will be in front of these stores giving out the raffle tickets generally between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on each of the dates above. The Council needs volunteers to help. Please be generous with your time.

The raffle is one of the most important charitable works our Council performs and your assistance in selling the tickets we send you is not much to ask for such an important Council endeavor. We receive 60 cents on each dollar we take in, and this is one of our biggest fund-raisers.  The truck raffle supports important Knight’s charities and scholarship funds.

Raffle tickets are $1.00 a piece or 6 for $5.00.  We would appreciate it if you would help the Council by selling the tickets.
